T-minus 71 days, 09 hrs to KC Marathon

Took a bike ride with the neighbor again, but it was more fun with my new cyclocomputer. Now I know that I rode 5.02 miles with an average speed of 8.4 mph. After that I drove up to UMKC to run (as I was already quite sweaty.)

I ran a little bit too fast, but am feeling alright. Now to rest up for Saturday's run, which has got me a bit nervous. 3 hours is a long, long time to be running.

For some reason I thought it'd be fun to bike about 20 miles this morning. I read somewhere the a mile of running is about equivalent to 3-4 miles of biking, which means today's bike ride was about the workout of 5-6.7 miles of running. On paper, that doesn't seem so bad to me, as I can do a 10K without too much difficulty. Unfortunately, I think my lack of experience made this ride a bit more difficult than I anticipated, especially since my biking muscles are not nearly as developed as the running. Live and learn. We'll see how well I'm doing tomorrow. I was planning on another 5 miles, but that may very well change.

Oh, and I paused at the 10-mile mark for a bit and decided to see what jogging would feel like. I have some mild interest in duathlons and triathlons, and had read that the transition from biking to running can be quite difficult. This is very true. While I wasn't too tired from the biking at that point, my legs almost entirely refused to do anything remotely resembling jogging. I think I'll be saving other events until next year.

Ran up at UMKC with 5/1 run/walk splits. Pace was pretty quick with the AC and no hills. Afterwards I went for a bike ride with the neighbor kid, Joey. It was a really easy pace, obviously, and felt great after a relatively quick run.

I just eclipsed the 200 mi mark! Oh so many more to go...

This morning I got going around 7:30, but despite going early, it was already 80° outside with over 60 percent humidity. Awesome. I was dripping by the time I got back home. The route I took was rather hilly, which, when combined with the temperatures near the limit (I've read that anything over 85° means hit a treadmill) accounts for the slower pace. I think for the next week or so, I'll be running on the UMKC indoor track, which while less than ideal, is considerably better than this heat.

Of course, this weekend's long run will still be outside, I'll just get started around 5:00 am or so. Not that it'll help much. The only problem is how will I carry enough water? I'm already considering a four-mile loop, so that I can refill at home quickly when I need to.

Took a short bike ride today to get loosened up for a new week of running.

Run Log: Run: 8.0 mi - Week: 14.07 mi - Total: 199.6 mi

This is yesterday's run.

This was my longest run after my two-week hiatus. I was pretty tired after a mere 2.5 miles, but by mile 5 I was feeling good again, so I decided that I could go for 8 and not just 6, which was my backup goal. Now to gear up for 16 miles next week.

I'm going to try to log my biking a little bit on this blog as well. I'm going to need to do more cross training to get myself back into shape, plus, I remembered how fun it was to ride my bike in Grand Junction. There won't be any fun graphs, just brief descriptions of the rides.

Today I biked down to UMKC, staying on streets most of the way there and then the trolley track trail on the way back. Only problem with that trail is that it is mostly packed dirt, so the bike gets kind of dirty along the way.

Some catching up to do... Starting with July 12

I had missed a day of running due to sleeping in, and I decided that I'd somewhat combine two runs and make Saturday's run 8 miles as well to make up for some lost distance. Everything went pretty smoothly for this run.

Saturday's run, however, did not go so well...

I made it about 4 miles in the remarkable heat before the arch on my left foot started to hurt. I made it just a little bit further before I knew that I had to stop. Carrie came and got me. For the rest of the day, and the next day for that matter, walking was rather painful.

That was July 14th. On July 19th, my foot wasn't hurting me during the day, so I wanted to test it out.

The 0.36 miles ran should be an indicator of how well that went.

Then we went to Colorado, and I did do a lot of hiking and biking at the higher altitude, without much pain. By the end of the trip, I was feeling good, but I gave it two more days just to be sure.

This is Tuesday's run:

The 2+ miles went well, so I tried four this morning.

It wasn't the prettiest run in terms of pacing, but I got through it without too much difficulty. Saturday's run will be 6-8 miles up at UMKC, so I can stop whenever I need to. Then, next week, I'll have to see if I feel up to the 16-mile run I was supposed to do two weeks ago. Hopefully, I will, but unfortunately that will put me three weeks behind on a tight schedule. So, rather than try to accelerate anything on an already recovering foot, I'll just make my longest pre-marathon run 23 miles, and see what happens on Oct. 20.
